The Capital city of Emilia-Romagna is Bologna. This interesting city boasts excellent food, and is the centre of the political left in Italy. Bologna is very centrally located within Italy offering easy access to both Florence and Milan. There is a large and thriving university in Bologna which creates a youthful and vibrant atmosphere.
Emiglia Romagna benefits from a long history of prosperity, and is imbued with the spirit of fine living and boasts many exceptional Renaissance palaces and a particularly rich culinary heritage (lasagna, tortellini, Parmesan cheese and balsamic vinegar, Parma prosciutto, sangiovese wines, Lambrusco, and bolognese are just a few of many delicious regional innovations). A number of enjoyable excursions are easily undertaken whilst visiting Emiglia Romagna. Faenza, with its world-famous ceramics museum and production house, is the splendid medieval fortress at Brisighella-focus of an annual medieval festival. A short drive towards the Adriatic finds one in Ravenna, in the presence of the world's finest Byzantine mosaics outside of Istanbul, and from here it's just minutes to the wonderful resorts of the coast.
You can then head to Reggio Emilia which is an ancient town, with a cathedral and some fine churches and galleries, Parma is an elegant, affluent city with its own opera house, while Piacenza marks the western border with Lombardy.
Also visit Ferrara during your stay in Emilia-Romagna which is a fascinating historic town. And head south to the historic curiosity of San Marino, which has survived as an independent republic within Italy for nearly 2000 years.
Emiglia Romagna is a wonderful place for those to visit who enjoy good wine, art and food and who would perhaps prefer to be a little of the tourist trail. Emiglia Romagna is not as crowed as somewhere like Tuscany, yet it still offers the beautiful country side, history, and convenient location to be able to do day trips to many places in central Italy such as Florence, Umbria, Le Marche etc.
