Apartment at Capo D'Orlando on the Tyrrhenian Sea in Sicily
The apartment is in a split level building which was once part of a very ancient farm complex. The metre thick walls are made of stone and as such insulate the building well during the hot summers. The three balconies provide a magical panoramic view of the town below, an olive grove, ancient castle ruins, a C14th church and the Tyrrhenian Sea.
The apartment has been totally renovated and has traditional Sicilian tiles on the floors, double glassed doors which open to balconies in each room and ceiling fans, which make the building very pleasant, light and airy. Roll down shutters provide insulation and security although the area is very safe.
To get to town on foot, take the well worn path opposite, down through the olive grove and in 5 minutes you arrive at the railway station at the centre. Another 2 minutes and you are at the safe swimming beach of Capo D'Orlando.
The kitchen is modern, well supplied with cupboards, latest model gas cooker, table with 6 chairs, cutlery, crockery, refrigerator, freezer and cooking utensils .It opens out to a balcony with an outdoor setting. A charcoal BBQ is in the storeroom.
At the end of the hallway there is a bathroom with toilet, bath with shower over, electric HWS, bidet, basin and automatic washing machine. There is a line on one balcony.
There is one very spacious bedroom with a queen sized bed, chest of drawers, wardrobe, lamps and a single fold out bed.
The lounge room is enormous with a lounge suite, lamps, bookcases an extra sofa/bed lounge, tables, carpet, TV and 2 long windows which open out to the views. Both sofas open into 2 double beds.
A polished wood dining suite with extension table and 6 chairs offers evening dining with views over the town full of sparkling lights.
In the hallway there is a chest of drawers for extra storage and at the opposite end to the bathroom a storeroom with gas heater and linen storage.
All kitchen linen, bed linen, towels and beach towels are provided at no extra cost.
There is off-street parking just below the entry to the apartment.
Capo D’Orlando has 18 banks so it is a busy commercial centre. The population comprises approx 13000 people spread over the hills. The town is clean and modern with beautiful boutiques as well as shops carrying a cheaper range of goods. Supermarkets, restaurants, bars and pastrycook shops are in abundance and an outdoor market each Thursday morning sells fresh fish, fruit, vegetables and meat direct from farms. It is VERY safe town and tourists swell the numbers in the summer months as the shores of the bay are sandy and very clean. People wander about at night enjoying the beaches and eating out until the shops close at 9.30.
In front of the railway station, buses depart for other towns but these are not always on time, so it pays to rent a small car from local Tourist Agencies to explore the Island.
The Sicilian culture is ancient and diverse and has much to offer the tourist. Within 2 hours one can almost traverse the Island and visit Greek, Roman, Norman, Arabic and Spanish archeological gems, eat flavoursome meals and explore the many hilltop villages. The inhabitants are friendly and helpful, having many connections with Australia due to migration.
