Umbria is one of the smallest regions in Italy located just east of Tuscany. It is often referred to as the green heart of Italy. With its rolling hills, fields of olive groves, ancient buildings, and stunning landscape once could mistake this region for its neighbour Tuscany quite easily.
There are not too many cities in ancient Umbria which is refreshing and part of its charm. Umbria has retained many of Italy’s old world traditions and it has built up a name for itself as one of the countries slow food regions. It is common to spend 3 hours over one meal whilst in Umbria.
When visiting Umbria one should enjoy exploring cities such as Perugia, Assisi, Spoleto and Orvieto.
Perugia is a very lively city with its famous university for foreigners. It has a thriving art scene and several cultural events and music concerts. Begin your stroll at Corso Vanucci, through Piazza Italia to the heart of the city Piazza IV Novembre where you will find the cathedral and the Fontana Maggiore. For art lovers pay a visit to the Galleria Nazionale dell ‘Umbria which houses 30 rooms of art work dating back to the 13th century. One is sure to enjoy at least a day or two exploring this ancient city with its vibrant youthful energy.
Assisi is the religious and spiritual capital of Umbria. St Francis of Assisi was born here in 1182 and he spread his good world throughout the region until he died in 1226.
The famous Basilica di san Francesco unfortunately saw a lot of damage during the earthquakes in 1997. It has taken 13 years of restoring crumbled frescoes and art work that is said by many to be the most beautiful in of Italy.
Also pay a visit to the 13th century Romanesque Basilica di Santa Chiara and other famous landmarks where St Francis heard the voices of Jesus and God
The Umbrian hill town of Spoleto is famous for the festival of two worlds. It combines dance, music theatre and other forms of art and is said to be one of the best of its kind in the world. Whilst in Spoleto make sure to visit the Museo Archeologico, the first century Teatro Romano, and the stunning Duomo.
Orvieto sits on a cliff made of limestone and certainly attracts the tourists during summer with is magnificent Gothic Cathedral. There are 9 main attractions in Orvieto and you can purchase a Unico card will allow you to enter into all of them including the Capella di san Brizio in the cathedral, Museo Claudio, Orvieto underground, Faina e Civico, Torre del Moro, Museo dell Opera del duomo, and the Crocifisso.
