The Aragon Castle

The Aragonese Castle, the most impressive historical monument of Ischia, stands proudly on a volcanic rock, connected to the island by a bridge constructed in 1438 under the reign of Alfonso of Aragon.

Originally established as a castrum in 474 BC by Gerone of Syracuse, the Castle underwent periods of neglect before experiencing its zenith during the fourteenth century.

Under the Aragonese dynasty, it evolved into a significant political, cultural, and spiritual center. The Renaissance court of the esteemed poet Vittoria Colonna marked the pinnacle of the castle’s splendor.

Today, this unique ambiance hosts a boutique hotel and four apartments within the Castle, each boasting breathtaking views. While renovated and fitted with modern amenities, these spaces retain their original simplicity and tranquility, offering an unmistakable allure for contemplation and a spiritual retreat. The apartments are either for 2 or 4 guests and offer self catering facilties.

Parking poses a significant challenge on the island; therefore, we advise against bringing vehicles. Ischia features frequent bus services and a taxi network, simplifying transportation. Alternatively, scooters are available for rent.

For hassle-free travel arrangements, we highly recommend prearranging a transfer service, encompassing taxi rides from Naple’s airport or train station to the hydrofoil, hydrofoil tickets to Ischia, and a taxi from the Ischia waterfront to the castle.

Guests of the apartments benefit from hotel amenities provided by the adjacent establishment, including porter and concierge services, as well as dining on the hotel terrace. The hotel concierge offers invaluable assistance in ferry bookings to nearby Capri or Naples, vehicle rentals, scooter hires, and information regarding Ischia’s attractions.

Ischia, Capri, Procida, and Vivara collectively form the Partenopean islands in the Bay of Naples. Ischia, Procida, and Vivara lie to the north of the gulf, while Capri is situated to the south, facing the Sorrento Peninsula. Ischia’s Mediterranean climate is characterized by dry, warm weather, with temperatures occasionally reaching 35°C in July and August. Mount Epomeo (789 meters above sea level) dominates the island, which is adorned with numerous hills, valleys, and gullies, creating a captivating landscape filled with chestnut and oak woods and lush vegetation. The island’s circumference measures approximately 39 kilometers.

Renowned for its therapeutic thermal waters, Ischia boasts mineral-rich spa springs sourced from underground reservoirs fed by rainfall. Rainwater permeates the earth, gathering in reservoirs warmed by subterranean hot springs. The resulting thermo-mineral water, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 86°C, offers a range of health benefits.
Noteworthy among these thermal baths are the renowned Negombo hot baths, nestled in the Bay of S. Montano near Lacco Ameno in the island’s northwest. Open from April to October, these chic facilities feature multiple pools set amidst picturesque surroundings teeming with vibrant flora, including palm trees and flowering shrubs. The popularity of Ischia’s coastline among global visitors can be attributed in part to these hot springs, which contribute to the island’s mild climate throughout the year.
