Personalities
"I assure you that even with the experience I have had of the most beautiful landscapes in Italy and elsewhere, I know of nothing that can compare with the view one enjoys from the tower and the Queen's palace."
— Robert Browning, in a letter dated 1889 to Mrs. FitzGerald
The timeless charm of Asolo has drawn countless intellectuals and artists, among them Robert Browning, Eugene Benson, Igor Stravinsky, and Ernest Hemingway. Three extraordinary women also left their mark here: Caterina Cornaro, former Queen of Cyprus, who in 1489 established a vibrant Renaissance court of artists, writers, and poets; Eleonora Duse (1858–1924), the world-renowned actress and star of international theatre; and Freya Stark, the celebrated explorer, author, and photographer.
Local Traditions
In Asolo, every corner reveals a welcoming trattoria where visitors can savor the authentic flavors of the local culinary tradition: sarde in saor, Treviso or Castelfranco radicchio, pasta and beans, pumpkin dishes, and the celebrated white asparagus from Bassano.
Asolo is also part of the national “Città del Vino” (Wine Cities) network and celebrates its prestigious wines each August with special tastings and events.
The town preserves a rich heritage of handicrafts, a true treasure of ancient knowledge:
The Embroidery School of Asolo, dedicated to fine linen, lace, and artistic ornaments.
Colorful hand-painted ceramics, from elegant vases to finely decorated cups.
The monthly antiques market, offering furniture, paintings, jewelry, and collectibles showcased in the many galleries beneath the porticoes and in the town squares.
Antiques Fair
The Asolo Antiques Fair takes place every second Sunday of the month, filling the town’s squares and arcades with stalls offering furniture, paintings, jewelry, and unique collectibles.
The Name “Il Galero”
The villa takes its name from the galero, a broad-brimmed hat with tasselled cords traditionally worn by Catholic clergy. Over the centuries, the red galero became reserved exclusively for cardinals, while other colors such as green or violet were used by clergy of different ranks.
