ABOUT MANTOVA Mantua is less than 30 minutes from Verona at 1 hr drive from Padova and Modena. Besides its artistic and historical treasures, Mantua excels for its food tradition and wide range of choice in activities from boat excursions on the lakes surrounding the town to the bicycle tracks connecting the town to Lake Garda. ABOUT YOUR ACCOMMODATION: Palazzo Castiglioni is a 13th century palace in the heart of Mantova, a hidden gem declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008. The palace offers wonderful, unique accommodations that combine ancient grandeur with modern luxury. Palazzo Castiglioni is the oldest palace in town and is located just across from the legendary Palazzo Ducale. Guests enter the palace through the massive wooden doors and pass along an elegant courtyard The Palace develops on 4000 sq meters ( 13100 sq ft). The top floor room of the Tower hosts a great 8-meter high frescoed wall representing “the Tree of Life” dating back to 1300 which constitutes one of the oldest examples of non-religious frescoes in Europe Palazzo Castiglioni is still today the private residence of the descendants of Baldesar Castiglione, Italian writer and diplomat of the Renaissance.

DAY 2 SEPT 20- MANTOVA : THE DUCAL PALACE GUIDED TOUR

AFTERNOON Meet the guide Giuliana Varini in the living room of Palazzo Castiglioni for an introduction to the Renaissance culture in Italy. In 2020 the world will celebrate the 500th anniversary of Raphael death with international exhibitions in cities around the globe (including Mantova), your guide will take this opportunity to talk about the friendship and collaboration between Baldassare Castiglione and Raphael.

Explore Palazzo Ducale, the residence of the Gonzaga family during the nearly 400 years of their rule over the city. A town within the town, it is the city’s main attraction and one of the most visited museums in Italy, the tour includes the Rooms of “Raphael’s Tapestries”, as well as the magnificent, Camera degli Sposi by the painter Mantegna. DAY 3 SEPT 21- BORGHETTO SUL MINCIO AND PARCO SIGURTÀ

MORNING Drive to the village of Borghetto sul Mincio (a 45 minutes drive )listed as one of the “most beautiful village in Italy”. Wander by the river, see the water mills. The area is known for its traditional tortellini shops.

12:30.pm LUNCH at La Vecchia Bottega in Borghetto sul Mincio 2,30 The Sigurtà Park and Gardens covers an area of 600,000 square meters (visit with bike or golf cart). Among the attractions the blossom of 30,000 highly selected Queen Elizabeth and Hybrid Polyantha & Floribunda roses along the Avenue of Roses . The maze, where visitors can make their way into the extraordinary labyrinth of hedges made up of 1,500 yew trees (Taxus baccata).

DAY 4 SEPT 22 – MANTOVA PALAZZO TE GUIDED TOUR

AFTERNOON Discover the suburban villa Palazzo Te, Giulio Romano’s masterpiece and a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture and painting., Built as a suburban pleasure for the duke of Mantova The fantastic illusions and tricks of Raphael’s favourite pupil still succede in creating astonishment in the viewer. Gorgeous is the room of Cupid and Psyche with ist erotic frescoes and amazing is the one of the Falling Giants. The “clever tricks”, either in painting and architecture, still deceive the viewer. The frescoes tell about love and war: mythology that helps to understand the story of the life of duke Federico II Gonzaga, ruler of Mantua and great patron of artists.

DAY 5 SEPT 23– VERONA GUIDED TOUR

9:00 Head to Verona by a private driver for a 2 hours guided tour including the Roman amphitheater Arena in piazza Bra, the busy Piazza Erbe and Piazza dei Signori, and the world famous “Casa di Giulietta” (Juliet’s house, as in Romeo and Juliet).
