The second biggest island in the Mediterranean (the first one is Sicily), Sardinia is a paradise for beach lovers! Whether you want to enjoy the life of the glitterati in the famous resorts of Costa Smeralda, or explore the more authentic southern coast, you will marvel at the beautiful beaches of the island, the combination of white sand and emerald water particularly appreciated by surfers. As beautiful as the coastline can be, some of the most memorable sights are found underwater so snorkeling and scuba diving are a must do! For golf lovers, three beautiful 18-hole golf courses are located on the island, the Pevero Golf Club on the north coast, Is Arenas Golf Club on the west coast, and Is Molas Golf Club on the south coast. Thanks to the proximity of the sea the golf courses enjoy unique water views and a mild climate, particularly favorable for golf all year round.
Cagliari is the capital of Sardinia and the island’s largest city. In Cagliari, visit the Castle, the Archeological Museum, the Marina district near the port, with its arcaded street with cafes and shops, the town hall, and several churches. Do not miss Cagliari botanic gardens and the Roman amphitheater, built in the second century, where outdoor concerts are held during the summer.
In the southern area, we suggest a visit to Baia Chia beaches, with a forest of Juniper trees and sand dunes as a backdrop. You should also explore Capo Malfatano, Cala Cipolla, Tuarredda and the beautiful beach of Cala Zafferano. This area offers a wide range of activities including sightseeing of the ancient Phoenician, Punic, and Roman remains at Nora, including those of an ancient Roman outdoor theater where performances are still held in summer. Animal lovers should check the natural marine shelter and sea turtle rescue center at Nora Lagoon.

Sardinia is a hub for handicrafts, making it a souvenir shopper’s paradise. Look for wooden carnival masks, handmade lace, filigree jewelry, cork, and world famous handmade knives. Do not forget to try the smoked ricotta, the Pecorino Cheese (sheep’s milk cheese), our favorite is Fiore Sardo, or notable wines and the head-splitting firewater, filu e ferru, the local semolina pasta called “fregole”, a close relative to couscous. To make sure you are buying local, look for signs advertising “Prodotti Tipici Sardi”, or the island-sponsored I.S.O.L.A. co-op stores.

Etna. As the highest active volcano in Europe and Sicily's tallest mountain. Mt. Etna is a true natural wonder: don't miss the chance to explore it by booking a guided excursion with our concierge. Taormina, one of the most famous towns in Sicily, is located high atop Mount Tauro. The magnificent Mediterranean blue bay and the nearby smoldering Mt. Etna merge into a spectacular view that can be seen from almost any point in the city. Since 1914, from early May to the end of June, the city has staged ancient comedies and tragedies in its Greek theatre. A stroll through the streets of Ortigia leads to the fascinating baroque cathedral that incorporates an ancient temple to Athena. Make sure you check the Fountain of Arethusa, site of the Greek legend. Noto is the undisputed capital of Sicilian Baroque. Generally listed as one of the 'must-see' tourist attractions on the East coast of Sicily. The town was declared humanity heritage by UNESCO in 2002. Here you can enjoy the most beautiful non equipped beaches of the island, Eloro, Cittadella or Calamosche inside the natural reserve of Vendicari, which is also home to thousands of migrating flamingos and sea turtle nests. If you prefer the comfort of equipped beaches, check the ones in Noto Marina or San Lorenzo. If you are in this area on the third week of May, take note of the famous and suggestive "Infiorata", a picturesque festival to welcome the spring, where local artists work overnight to prepare colorful real flower carpets all over the streets. Other sites worth visiting in the surroundings of Noto (by car) include Noto Antica - the older town - Modica, Palazzo Acreide, Ragusa - a similarly-appealing Baroque town - the necropolis at Pantalica and Ispica Caves. A winding scenic drive along the coastal road, known for its hairpin bends and spectacular views, takes visitors to Positano, Praiano, Amalfi and the spellbinding uphill town of Ravello, with its incomparable belvedere. Any of these popular resort towns along the coast are good bases for exploring the surrounding areas. Buses and ferries run frequently and are the most convenient way to reach other towns while avoiding what could be a challenging drive in the bustling summer traffic. Other excursion possibilities include a boat trip to the islands of Capri and Ischia, a visit to the vibrant cities of Napoli, Salerno, or the gracious Sorrento, or an exploration of Pompeii and Herculaneum - the fascinating ruins of ancient cities destroyed by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in the 1st century A.D. The Amalfi Coast offers an abundance of cafes, shops, art galleries and restaurants on its vertical terrain. Most beaches are small pebble inlets of land thus the best way to enjoy the sand and the turquoise water is to tour the area by boat (ask our concierge about it!) and let an expert local captain take you to his favorite spots or suggest the best seaside restaurants. A memorable experience!
